About the WAP

The World Association of Psychoanalysis has set itself the objective of promoting the development of psychoanalysis throughout the world. It advances the practice and study of psychoanalysis in accordance with the teachings of Jacques Lacan, and develops actions for the training and democratisation of psychoanalysis. Founded in Buenos Aires on 3 January 1992 and declared in Paris on 7 February 1992, the WAP embraces the intention expressed by Jacques Lacan in his Founding Act of the French School of Psychoanalysis, adopts the principles contained in his Proposition on the Psychoanalyst of the School (1967) and is part of the movement to reclaim the Freudian field which began on 21 June 1964.

To achieve its objectives, the WAP maintains close links with the Association of the Foundation of the Freudian Field. The WAP has recognised several Schools: In America: School of the Lacanian Orientation (Argentina), New Lacanian School (various Latin American countries), Brazilian School of Psychoanalysis (Brazil). In Europe: École de la Cause Freudienne (France), Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis (Spain), Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis (Italy) and the New Lacanian School (various European countries).

The WAP ensures that psychoanalysis is disseminated throughout the world by means of educational activities. It must publicise the initiatives of the various Schools, both by disseminating them to the media and by supporting them with the mental health authorities. In each of its Schools, it encourages the creation of free Consultation Centres to ensure that psychoanalytic treatment remains within the reach of the general public. It is concerned with mental health legislation in the various countries where it operates.
